Rams Take out #13 VMI

The Rams knew that their performance this weekend would be pivotal for not only their semester, but for their season as a whole. Friday they endured the two hour drive to Lynchburg, VA to take on the always physical VMI Keydets. Coming into the the came, VMI was ranked #13 in the South and were atop the Atlantic Division with six points (3-1). They quickly proved they were no joke when they scored 13 seconds in on new VCU goalie Colin Davis. The Keydets would eventually knock another one in before ending the first period up 2-0. VCU simply came out flat in the first and weren't playing the way they were capable of. But leave it up to Coach Zeka to talk some sense into the players, and you can believe he did just that. The Rams came out flying in the second and at the 9:55 mark of the second, Junior Eric Fernandez finally cracked the VMI goalie with his 4th of the season. Then came the momentum breaker for the Keydets. The VMI Assistant captain got into a scuffle with new Ram, Sophomore Phil Myers causing each to get DQ'd with the VMI player also receiving an additional two minutes for Instigating the fight. VCU would convert on the power play and never look back. For the remainder of the game VMI would continue to get in penalty trouble, and VCU kept on converting on the power play. VCU scored six goals straight goals before the discouraged Keydets were able to pop in two goals in the finals minutes of the third to make it 6-4. The Rams were led by Junior Dallas Woods (goal, three assists) and Captain Brian Sutton (two goals, two assists) in the upsetting of the ranked VMI Keydets. With the win the Rams take over first place in the Atlantic and hope to continue their winning ways tomorrow when they travel to Newport News to take on the much improved William & Mary squad.
